Ozone Therapy in Dentistry

What is ozone? It’s simply three atoms of oxygen bonded together instead of two. Some people think of ozone as being harmful to humans, but used in the correct way in the appropriate dosage, it provides many benefits for dental patients, such as:
  • Eliminating post-treatment pain: Applying ozone to a tooth being filled eliminates painful sensitivity in nearly every patient.
  • Antimicrobial treatment: Because it is a disinfectant, ozone can kill viruses, bacteria, mold, parasites and fungi that might be hiding in the mouth or even under the gums.
  • Preconditioning root canal extractions: Injecting ozone gas into the area surrounding a root canal extraction reduces post-surgical pain and inflammation by roughly 50 percent. There are additional benefits however. The ozone also begins to kill unhealthy microbes—tiny organisms such as bacteria and viruses—in the area thereby reducing infection in the blood. Ozone also speeds recovery time by oxygenating the area to recruit blood flow for healing.
  • Preserving damaged teeth: When a tooth is damaged but still alive, ozone therapy may be able to save it, which then prevents the need for root canal therapy. Even when decay extends almost to the nerve, ozone treatment and a non-toxic filling can save it while also preventing it from being painful or sensitive after treatment.

Dr. Chang utilizes ozone during cleanings, extractions, fillings, treatment of cavitations and/or previous root canals and other infection or inflammation issues. It has a remarkable ability to improve healing.

“Ozone can kill viruses, bacteria, mold, parasites and fungi thousands of times more effectively than bleach, but won’t harm humans when used properly. I can’t imagine practicing dentistry without using ozone, given all the benefits it offers to our patients.”
