What Is Laser Dentistry?
Laser dentistry uses focused beams of light energy to perform precise dental procedures on soft and hard tissues. It can be used for a wide range of treatments — from reshaping gums and reducing bacterial infections to treating cold sores and improving comfort during deep cleanings.
This innovative approach minimizes bleeding, swelling, and the need for traditional tools like scalpels or sutures. Because of its gentle and accurate nature, laser dentistry has become a preferred method for patients seeking
minimally invasive dental care in Round Rock.
Laser Dentistry vs. Traditional Dentistry
Traditional dental methods often involve scalpels, sutures, or mechanical tools. While still effective, these tools can sometimes cause discomfort, require longer healing times, and contribute to patient anxiety.
In contrast, laser dental treatment offers:
- Minimal discomfort — reduced need for anesthesia
- Faster healing — less inflammation and trauma
- No noise or vibration — ideal for anxious patients
- Greater precision — preserves healthy tissue
- Lower infection risk — laser sterilizes as it works
For many patients in Round Rock, this means a more relaxed, pain-free experience and quicker return to normal activities.
What Are Patients Saying?
I visited Transcend Dental Health and Dr. Chang for a second opinion after
experiencing extreme sensitivity in one of my teeth.

My previous dentist performed an exam and X-ray but found no clear issue, yet they still recommended a root canal as my only option.
I'm so glad I sought another perspective! Dr. Chang and his team took the time to perform a thorough exam, including a cone beam CT scan, and they identified two small ‘wear and tear’ spots that were the real cause of my pain. Instead of an unnecessary root canal, they simply filled those areas—resolving my discomfort without an invasive procedure.
Not only that, but Dr. Chang carefully reviewed the entire scan with me and even caught a developing cavity that would have caused issues in just a few weeks. Thanks to his attention to detail, I was able to address it early and prevent further complications.
The team here is professional, detail-oriented, and truly focused on finding the right solution rather than defaulting to aggressive treatments. I really appreciate their patient-centered approach, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a thoughtful and thorough dentist!

I have never had a dentist who made me feel so heard. Dr. Kevin also went over all my past dental work. something that no other dentist has done with me before.

It was a very in-depth appointment, and you can tell the staff really cares for their patients. I also have a cold sensitivity, and during the cleaning, they used warm water. I will be switching my whole family over to them.

I went to Transcend Dental Health for a second opinion on a root canal, as my current dentist is very conventional. I went in fully expecting to be told to extract the tooth.

After x-rays of the root of the tooth and a CT scan to check out a previous root canal on a different tooth (prior to knowing how bad they are), he gave me the pros and cons. He doesn't like root canals but does recommend them in certain situations. I didn't realize that there are some major cons to extractions.
He fully explained my tooth situation using the x-rays and CT scan, giving me time to process and ask all questions I could come up with. He did not press me to get work done with his office. He was friendly and pleasant, as was his assistant and front office staff. This was my first time using a holistic dentist, and I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Chang and his entire office.

I've been very happy going to Transcend Dental Health for the past three years. Dr. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable, caring, and funny.

I had some issues with past dental work, specifically the way old crowns were created. He fixed those issues, and my teeth and health are doing so much better. His team also has a lot of information about the best holistic dental practices, which are based on science and actually work. I'm also super happy with Stephanie as my dental hygienist. In every other dentist's office, I've always had issues with them being too rough during my cleaning, then judging me for the fact that my gums bled due to their rough treatment. Stephanie is very gentle but thorough, and quite a delight to talk to as well. Overall I've had nothing but positive experiences here, and I would highly recommend them to everyone.
Common Laser Dentistry Treatments
Our Round Rock dental team uses laser technology to enhance a variety of treatments, including:
Gum disease treatment (periodontal therapy)
Lasers are used to gently remove infected tissue and kill bacteria deep below the gum line. This encourages the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth with minimal discomfort and faster recovery.
Gum reshaping (cosmetic and medical)
Whether you're dealing with excess gum tissue or need a more even gum line, lasers provide a clean, bloodless alternative to traditional scalpel methods.
Cold sore and ulcer treatment
Laser energy can dramatically reduce the pain, duration, and recurrence of cold sores and mouth ulcers when applied early.
Biopsies and lesion removal
Soft tissue lasers can remove suspicious or benign oral lesions cleanly and with minimal trauma, often eliminating the need for stitches.
Treatment of infected tissues around implants
In cases of peri-implantitis, lasers are used to disinfect the area, remove infected tissue, and help save the implant from failure.
Step-by-Step: What to Expect During a Laser Dentistry Appointment
Knowing what to expect can ease nerves and help you feel prepared for your visit. Here’s a breakdown of what a typical laser dentistry appointment looks like at our Round Rock office:
1. Before Your Visit
Your journey begins with a personalized consultation. Dr. Kevin Chang will review your dental history, discuss your goals, and determine whether laser dentistry is the right approach for your needs. We'll explain the treatment options in simple terms and answer any questions you may have.
2. During the Procedure
On the day of your appointment, the experience is designed to be smooth and comfortable. Laser treatments typically don’t require anesthesia, and there’s no noise, vibration, or pressure like you’d feel with traditional tools. You might feel a warm sensation or slight tingling as the laser works, but discomfort is minimal.
3. Aftercare and Recovery
Once your procedure is complete, you'll be given clear aftercare instructions. Thanks to the precision of the laser, most patients experience very little swelling or bleeding. Healing is typically faster than traditional methods; in most cases, you can return to your regular activities the same day.
