THE MOUTH IS A WINDOW INTO THE BODY: Integrative Biologic Dental Hygiene
by Matthew Carpenter, DDS, NMD
Everyone has dental plaque, a mixture of food and bacteria forming on your teeth 24/7. Bacteria in the mouth are normal, but harmful bacteria sometimes take residence in plaque and in spaces where gums meet teeth. These harmful bacteria form disease-causing biofilms and are allowed access to your internal environment and vital organs when oral bleeding occurs in the mouth – frequently the result of excess plaque sitting for long periods of time against the gums. For this reason, increasing your awareness of oral plaque is a key component in improving gum health and preventing decay.
Why we analyze your plaque…
As part of a biologic approach to oral health care, we analyze plaque forming around your teeth to determine if you have bacteria or parasites that are causing periodontal disease and/or other systemic health problems. Periodontal disease affects 80% of adults in North America, and approximately 62% of cases are caused by parasites, living animals that cause varying degrees of infection and symptoms – including digestive disturbances, prostate problems, and anemia.
When patients eliminate these pathogens from the mouth, we observe gingiva healing without surgery, 99% of the time. The goal is to identify the cause of gum problems by microscope, and then treat it without harmful chemicals or costly surgeries.
Bacteria, fungi, and parasites are around you every day, just like the common cold virus. It’s only when your immune system’s compromised that pathogens take hold and cause soft tissue and bone destruction associated with periodontal disease. If it’s not treated and controlled, teeth eventually loosen and fall out.
To evaluate the quality of organisms and the potential for disease in your mouth, a simple test is performed. A small sample of saliva and plaque from around your teeth is collected on a slide and examined using a phase contrast microscope – you can see on the computer monitor what we see under the microscope. By identifying pathogens, we can tailor a protocol that not only improves your oral health but helps in the elimination of systemic infections as well. Our practice specializes in improving immune function and the body’s built-in resistance to disease, and to these harmful microbes. This is, after all, your best defense. Along with our findings, recommendations are made for eliminating infection and boosting your body’s natural defense against opportunistic pathogens.
Then there’s the importance of brushing and flossing.
Diet plays a huge roll in the formation of cavities, but when bacteria sit around in your mouth for a long time, they form more and more sophisticated biofilms – like complex bacterial cities in the mouth. Wise old biofilms use many natural strategies to resist your natural salivary immune defenses that prevent disease, leading to periodontal disease and oral decay.
One key, therefore, is constantly and consistently disrupting these sophisticated biofilms that are always forming in the mouth. This is really the only goal of manual, oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing – disrupting the plaque matrix where biofilms develop.
We teach daily schedules and protocols for removing the plaque matrix that leads to the creation of disease-causing biofilms. We fight oral biofilms intelligently by using ozone when you’re in the office, share strategies for controlling plaque, employ high-quality essential oil blends that naturally kill bad bacteria and break down bio-films, and advocate products that alkalize the mouth and slow the growth of harmful bacteria.
We also repopulate the mouth with health-producing bacteria found in oral probiotics, helping change the culture of your mouth over time to one of health, beauty, confidence, and stability.
When you use most over-the-counter mouthwashes to prevent bad breath, you kill both good and bad bacteria – and it’s up to good bacteria to keep bacteria that cause bad breath in check. In fact, Streptococcussalivarius (not the one that causes Strep throat, but one that can fight oral infections) is often found in healthy mouths, yet is deficient in those who suffer from bad breath.
The best long-term solution to eradicating bad breath is repopulating your oral cavity with good oral bacteria. Typically, we try to mask bad breath with cosmetic products –mouth rinses, mints, gums, sprays. They may offer a quick fix, but those mints and other sugary products are often causing cavities.

BIOLOGIC DENTISTRY: What exactly is it, and how can it contribute to your health?
by Dr. Matthew Carpenter, DDS
There’s no recognized specialty for Biologic Dentistry, although there are a few reputable holistic dental organizations that pay attention to science, as well as to the impact dental materials and procedures can have on your health and your propensity for autoimmune disease, heart disease, or neurological disorders.
The best biologic dental organizations are the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology), the IABDM (International Academy of Biologic Dental Medicine) and the HDA (Holistic Dental Association). There are accreditation exams for each organization. If you’re seeking a biologic dentist, you’d want to know they’re accredited members of one of these organizations.
One of the problems – and blessings – with biologic dentistry is there’s really no baseline for procedures or protocols. As with any organization promoting truth and honesty, there will be varied opinions, and all are welcome. They all serve to improve awareness of informed, consented, and research-based approaches to the safe removal of poisonous metals, no use of fluoride, and natural approaches to dental hygiene.
Like poison in our air, chemicals and toxins in our water, genetically modified and chemically treated food, poisons in our dental work can illicit disease. A few illnesses documented in research to be related to toxic dentistry include Hashimoto’s disease, Lupus, Leukemia, Sjogrens disease, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, fibromyalgia, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s, heart disease, and cancer.
I chose to change my dental practice out of necessity, like most people choose a different path with natural healing – whether it’s diet, supplementation, meditation, chiropractic, biofeedback, neural therapy, acupuncture, prayer, muscle testing, massage – and see it now as a blessing. There are good forces guiding us.
As an Integrative Biologic dentist, there are three basic levels of how I assess the impact of dental procedures and materials on patients – Structural, Microbiological, and Energetic.
When you look at the anatomical relationship of the mouth to the heart, you realize that it looks like your favorite water slide at Schlitterbahn. Vessels draining toxins from the mouth (from infected gums, teeth, sinuses, and tonsils) have the ability to drain directly into the heart. A current look at heart disease from cardiologist Tom Levy demonstrated that most infectious agents in atherosclerosis, heart attack, and coronary artery disease originate in the mouth – particularly from root canals.
By pumping cerebral fluid through your brain’s tissues, the glial lymphatic (glymphatic) system system flushes wastes from your brain back into your body’s circulatory system. From there, it eventually reaches the liver, where it’s ultimately eliminated. It’s been demonstrated repeatedly in research that mercury from fillings enters the brain within minutes of the fillings being placed in the mouth.
In my practice, we help remove metals safely, and through supplementation and neural therapy help stimulate this system to drain toxins from the brain.
Bacteria, parasites, mold, fungus, viruses – the mouth is a dirty place. From anaerobic bacteria associated with gum disease that produce hydrogen sulfide gas, to the Mycobacterium Leprae (leprosy) routinely discovered in genetic pathology reports of root canal-treated teeth, the mouth can contain some of the most toxic bacteria in the world.
When you have an infection, the entire immune system is alerted. When you have eight or ten necrotic bone infections in your mouth, the immune system becomes overwhelmed. It’s why you experience fatigue if you have an abscessed tooth – it’s draining your energy.
A competent immune system is intimately tied to having a healthy life. Infections observed in an unhealthy mouth routinely cause death, and no one is safe from this possibility, regardless of race, socio-economic status, or gender. Death by oral infection happens to successful people every day.
At Transcend Dental Health we use microscopes and genetic reports to diagnose these bacteria and use ozone, essential oils, and natural products to help patients be at their best health – naturally. We help patients create individualized daily hygiene protocols to help keep their mouths from becoming an instigator to blood-borne bacteria.
In our office, we routinely use a Chinese Tooth, Organ, and Meridian chart to help discover oral and systemic connections of disease, and strategies for healing. Thomas Rau, MD, who operates a clinic in Switzerland, found root canal-treated teeth in ninety-seven percent of the breast cancer patients he treated, on the same meridian as the breast. (The breasts are energetically connected to the upper right and left first molars, #3 and #14, on the same meridian as the breast.) Jerry Tenant in Dallas found the number to be closer to ninety-nine percent of cancer patients he treated with a root canal on the same energetic meridian as the cancer.
Think of it like electricity through a wire. A root canal is a dead tooth draining vitality from the meridian it’s on, resulting in low vitality of energetic life force traveling through that meridian – potentially affecting each organ, joint, muscle, and gland sharing that meridian. The light bulb won’t shine as brightly if there’s loss of power in the wire supplying it electricity.
Resonate with any of this information?
A consultation and a review of your panoramic radiograph can let you know if dental procedures from your past, or materials you have in your mouth, could be contributing to your health problems. That could be a good resolution for a new year – or anytime.

NATURAL INJECTABLE THERAPIES
by Dr. Matthew Carpenter
Giving a medication with a hypodermic needle has been one of the greatest advances in modern medicine, and it’s only a little over a hundred years old.
If medication is given orally, a huge dose is needed to achieve the concentration necessary in the target tissue, and the rest of the body is frequently poisoned unnecessarily. Delivering a specific drug directly to the site, however, requires a much smaller dose. Some tissues that are disconnected from the whole, such as in cancer, can sometimes only be reached with a needle.
Needling allows the simulation of acupuncture points and dry needling of trigger points. With a fluid-bolus (a mass of injectable fluid), scar tissue can be broken up mechanically, adhesive tissue-planes can be gently separated, and normal anatomy can often be restored where there was a distortion due to trauma or infection.
Beyond anything else, the needle stick often will bring up held-back emotions and memories stored in injected tissue. These emotional releases are often the most important part of a healing intervention.
Because we do “normal” dental procedures in my office, injectable therapies are used as they relate to improving lymphatic drainage before surgery, and injectable ozone is used as a pre-conditioning tool to reduce infection before surgery (for root canals or cavitation lesions) and for inflammation. Pre-treating an area of the mouth with injectable ozone gas has been shown in research to reduce post-surgical pain and inflammation as much as fifty percent.
Injectable therapies are also used with other types of chronic head and neck infection– namely, sinus and tonsil infections. Sinus infections are the most common and energy-draining infections in the human race, and most modern approaches (antibiotics, surgery) can be damaging and are frequently ineffective.
I help treat sinus infections using a combination of different injectable therapies designed to support the body’s natural detox channels, break up points of infection in the bone and sinus cavities, and stimulate new healing by enhancing the body’s ability to heal.
To accomplish this, I use prolotherapy, which incorporates homeopathic injectable remedies and procaine. Procaine is a component of traditional German neural therapy which has a property of repolarizing or resetting the function of the inside nerve. This has the potential to reset function to the muscle or gland that the nerve innervates.
The ozone crawl.
I also use injectable ozone to treat sinus infections because of its ability to “crawl,” or travel to sites of infection. Ozone kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites equally, and is ideal when you consider the terrain of the sinuses.
In addition, injectable therapy is used to stimulate the head and neck and help drain infection. A lymphatic protocol using procaine and homeopathic injectables can reenergize your lymph nodes manually and energetically, creating profound effects more naturally and safely.
In cases where people have had chronic exposure to poisonous metals from dental work (like aluminum or mercury), injectable therapies help detox ganglia or collections of nervous tissues in the head and neck that have been polluted by metals.
When toxins like pesticides or metals first enter a nerve or ganglia, they may not immediately alter the function of the nerve or the muscle or tissue it innervates. However – over time, as the offending toxin or metal bio-accumulates in nervous tissue, it can begin to alter the function or competency of the nerve or the tissue it innervates. These are perceived as many unpleasant symptoms – hard to explain, but real. Ringing in the ears, burning of the tongue, dry mouth, painful face, autoimmune reactions in tissues – all are possible symptoms of nerves experiencing changes in function.
Many of these issues respond to natural injectable therapies that help reset the function of certain parts of the head and neck, like the sphenopalatine ganglia (a collection of nerves connected to the trigeminal nerve, associated with headaches and migraines), which also influences emotional health.

LOST IN THE BRAIN FOG
Rg3, Niagen, Hydroxycobalamin
by Dr. Matthew Carpenter
There are lots of causes of the condition referred to as brain fog, something really difficult to pin down – especially when you have it. Mady Hornig, MD, associate professor of epidemiology at New York’s Colombia University Medical Center, calls it “the inability to really punch through, a vague sense of what you’re trying to retrieve, but you can’t focus on it. The effort to harness the thought can be as draining as physical activity.”
Brain fog can be a symptom of many different mental and physical maladies, including fungal infections, metal toxicity, sleep denervation, hormone changes, high stress, side effects of prescription medications – the list goes on and on. Being a biological dentist working with mercury-toxic patients daily doesn’t mean I have the market cornered on brain fog, but I see a lot of it.
I ask all new patients to describe subjective complaints – how they don’t feel well – and we set goals for changes they want. One of the more frequent symptoms described is brain fog, an expected occurrence when you’ve been exposed to metals like mercury, which have been shown to harm brain neurons and cause neurodegeneration.
Retrograde axonal transport – and the supernatural.
The phenomenon of retrograde axonal transport is the science that demonstrates that mercury can move from your amalgam fillings through the nerves of your teeth, traveling back through nerves that control your nervous system to – your brain!
Being a biological dentist in the Austin and Round Rock area has its advantages, here one can find everything from alternative health practitioners to farmers markets to choices for grass-fed meat or local, organically grown vegetables in local restaurants. While I love duck eggs, Kimchi, and locally harvested honey, sometimes you come across natural things that have been turned into something, well – supernatural.
One of my favorite things is working with brilliant minds like Ray Solano, RPH, MBA, CCN, radio host, and head compounding pharmacist for Specialty Compounding. Ray and his lab have developed a new compounded solution with three synergistic ingredients – Rg3, Niagen, and Hydroxycobalamin – that shows promise with brain fog and neuro-degeneration. Users of the compound have reported instant improvements in memory, and the ability to articulate thoughts clearly and directly.
How it works:
- What is Rg3? (Editor’s note: No, not the former Baylor quarterback, benched by the Redskins, which is what you find when you search it online.) Derived by steaming Panax ginseng root, Rg3 is used for neuroprotection, decreasing inflammation, antifatigue, vasorelaxation, brain trauma protection, immune enhancement, cancer therapy, and protection from conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Ginseng root is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a general health tonic, and today is used mainly as an adaptogen, a substance that increases nonspecific resistance of the body to a wide range of chemical, physical, psychological and biological stressors. Purified individual ginsenosides – the pharmacologically active ingredients in ginseng – are becoming popular in integrative medicine to treat health conditions instead of whole ginseng root extract, since individual ginsenosides have different chemical structures and effects.
- What is Niagen? Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a more potent form of vitamin B3 – niacin, an important part of cellular metabolism that improves the way cells use energy. On a cellular level, NR is used to create the NAD+ coenzyme, which plays a key role in the function of mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of the cell. Research indicates that NR could be used as a nutritional supplement to improve metabolic and age-related disorders.
- What is Hydroxycobalamin? It’s a natural, more readily absorbable and bioavailable form of vitamin B12, the form to which the body has to convert any B12 you ingest in food and supplements to convert it into a usable form. It bonds to free radicals in your system.
