Sugar, Decay, and Going With the Flow

Sugar, Decay, and Going With the Flow

by Michael Abedin

You brush, floss, do everything right– and still wind up in the 92% of Americans the National Institute of Health estimates have tooth decay.

What’s the deal? Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, so how is something able to eat holes in it?

Conventional dental school wisdom, says biological dentist Matt Carpenter, is that decay starts on the surface of the tooth when bacteria feed on food debris and sugars, creating an acid that eats into the tooth from the outside in.

The truth, he says, may actually be inside out.

Carpenter turned his views about dentistry inside out and followed the work of Hal Huggins, the first to suggest it might not be the best idea to put mercury, a potent neurotoxin, in your mouth.

Huggins’ extensive work paralleled that of Dr. Weston Price, who examined skulls of deceased indigenous populations and reported only one cavity per thousand teeth. Recent CAT scans of well-preserved teeth of victims of the Pompeii volcanic eruption in 79 AD found the same thing – near-perfect teeth, no decay.

Diets of indigenous hunter-gatherers and first-century Italian urbanites varied, but had one thing in common – no simple sugars, the tooth assassin hiding in modern processed foods.

The smoking gun.

Huggins cited research showing nutrient-carrying fluid from the bloodstream flows through tubules in the tooth’s interior and enamel, mixing with saliva – but if the flow reversed, it carried bacteria, food particles, and acids back into the tooth’s pulp (and your bloodstream), leaching minerals out of enamel.

Decay is advanced demineralization, so a reverse flow would be, if not a smoking gun, at the least the click of one cocking in a dark room.

Huggins stated the saliva-producing parotid gland keeps things flowing the right way. Like other glands, it’s regulated by hormones produced by the endocrine system, which is nourished by proteins and overtaxed (and maybe crashed) by spikes and drops in blood sugar level – created largely by simple sugars.

Huggins called it the Big Discovery:

Sugar sitting on the tooth does not create dental decay. It is the control of the direction of the fluid flow by sugar that creates decay, not acids and sitting on the tooth…

Want to keep your fluids flowing? Keep brushing and flossing – but realize you can’t brush the sugar blues away.

The flow of this fluid, he concluded, was regulated by the saliva-producing parotid gland – which, like other glands in the body, is regulated by hormones produced by the endocrine system.

get a hole in it. human of the teeth, the hardest substance in the body, is made up mostly of minerals. When mineral loss occurs, enamel softens and decay begins.

Maybe not. If you do all the right things and still wind up with signs of decay (which can show up before actual cavities appear), it might be time to look at your diet – and turn the whole paradigm upside down.

Biological dentist Dr. Matthew Carpenter turned his view of dentistry around and became a student of the work of Hal Huggins, the first to suggest publicly that it might not be wise to put mercury, a potent neurotoxin, in your mouth – incurring the wrath of the dental establishment.

On the cause of decay, quotes Huggins, who in turn cites the work of Dr. Weston Price – an early researcher who found indigenous populations with little or no signs of decay:

In one place where (Price) was given permission to dig up skulls he found only one cavity per one thousand teeth. Decay is not the natural result of having teeth… Sugar and foods sitting on the tooth do not create dental decay. It is the fluid flow within the tooth that determines its health, and that is determined by the types of food you eat, not how long it remains in your mouth.

The enamel of the teeth, the hardest substance in the body, is made up mostly of minerals. When mineral loss occurs, enamel softens and decay begins. Huggins cited studies that showed that enamel is nourished by the flow of fluid from the bloodstream through the living soft tissue of the teeth, through the enamel, and even into the mouth.

Big discovery. Sugar sitting on the tooth does not create dental decay. It is the control of the direction of fluid flow by sugar that creates decay, not acids and food sitting on the tooth, as most dental schools teach.

As teeth decay, cavities appear – but why? Dentistry will tell you sugar, food, and bacteria sitting on your teeth causes cavities.

So all you have to do is brush your teeth But there’s more to it than that You can brush, but you can’t hide.

Dr. Weston Price, in his world travels a hundred years ago, found populations of people who had little or no decay. One place where he was given permission to dig up skulls of the dead, he found only 1 cavity per 1,000 teeth Decay is not the natural result of having teeth What is the scientific secret from the 60s that you are not being told.

Sugar and foods sitting on the tooth do not create dental decay. It is the fluid flow within the tooth that determines its health And that is determined by the types of foods you eat, not how long they remain in your mouth.
Dr. Ralph Steinman (DDS, MS) of the University of Loma Linda School of Dentistry answered the question of the origin of dental decay decades ago. He detailed life in teeth in over seventy scientific articles published while he was a researcher at Loma Linda. He described a “fluid flow” through teeth, and the direction of this flow created either susceptibility or resistance to dental decay.

Using radioactive isotopes in animal studies, he identified a fluid that flows from its blood source in the pulp chamber, through the dentin tubules, through the enamel, clear into the mouth. This fluid is derived from the bloodstream and travels within arterioles that go up the pulp chamber of the tooth in people free from dental decay.

In people who are experiencing dental decay, this fluid flow process is reversed Fluids flow from the mouth, through the enamel, through the dentin, and into the pulp chamber, dragging along acids, bacteria, and debris from the breakdown of residual foods in the mouth.

Demineralization occurs when the
normally hard enamel of the tooth becomes soften or is damaged Steinman showed that, when demineralization occurred, essential nutrients were leaching out of the teeth instead of being fed into the tooth parts from the bloodstream.

Further investigations taught Steinman that the direction of fluid flow was dependent upon the activity of an endocrine gland located on the side of the jaw. The parotid gland.

What controls the direction of this fluid flow? It’s controlled by the amount of hormone production, which in turn is controlled by the types of food we eat. Protein causes the fluid to flow healthily from the pulp chamber into the mouth, giving us resistance to dental decay – and glistening, pretty teeth. Sugars make the fluid flow the opposite way, from the mouth into the tooth. Big discovery. Sugar sitting on the tooth does not create dental decay. It is the control of the direction of fluid flow by sugar that creates decay, not acids and food sitting on the tooth, as most dental schools teach.

Fear You think you were afraid to go to the dentist yesterday. Walt until you read this Yes, we fear the unknown, pain, loss of teeth—but—do you really know the consequences of current dental procedures? Dental fillings contained toxic mercury 100 years ago, and dentists still place 100,000 mercury-emitting fillings every day in the U.S. Who of you knows that mercury is the primary cause of autoimmune diseases? That 100% of the 30,000,000 root canals placed yearly are havens for disease- producing bacteria? That dental nickel is related to breast cancer’ And why have you not been informed of these consequences

NATURAL INJECTABLE THERAPIES

by Dr. Matthew Carpenter

Giving a medication with a hypodermic needle has been one of the greatest advances in modern medicine, and it’s only a little over a hundred years old.

If medication is given orally, a huge dose is needed to achieve the concentration necessary in the target tissue, and the rest of the body is frequently poisoned unnecessarily. Delivering a specific drug directly to the site, however, requires a much smaller dose. Some tissues that are disconnected from the whole, such as in cancer, can sometimes only be reached with a needle.

Needling allows the simulation of acupuncture points and dry needling of trigger points. With a fluid-bolus (a mass of injectable fluid), scar tissue can be broken up mechanically, adhesive tissue-planes can be gently separated, and normal anatomy can often be restored where there was a distortion due to trauma or infection.

Beyond anything else, the needle stick often will bring up held-back emotions and memories stored in injected tissue. These emotional releases are often the most important part of a healing intervention.

Sinus infections.

Because we do “normal” dental procedures in my office, injectable therapies are used as they relate to improving lymphatic drainage before surgery, and injectable ozone is used as a pre-conditioning tool to reduce infection before surgery (for root canals or cavitation lesions) and for inflammation. Pre-treating an area of the mouth with injectable ozone gas has been shown in research to reduce post-surgical pain and inflammation as much as fifty percent.

Injectable therapies are also used with other types of chronic head and neck infection– namely, sinus and tonsil infections. Sinus infections are the most common and energy-draining infections in the human race, and most modern approaches (antibiotics, surgery) can be damaging and are frequently ineffective.

I help treat sinus infections using a combination of different injectable therapies designed to support the body’s natural detox channels, break up points of infection in the bone and sinus cavities, and stimulate new healing by enhancing the body’s ability to heal.

To accomplish this, I use prolotherapy, which incorporates homeopathic injectable remedies and procaine. Procaine is a component of traditional German neural therapy which has a property of repolarizing or resetting the function of the inside nerve. This has the potential to reset function to the muscle or gland that the nerve innervates.

The ozone crawl.

I also use injectable ozone to treat sinus infections because of its ability to “crawl,” or travel to sites of infection. Ozone kills bacteria, viruses, and parasites equally, and is ideal when you consider the terrain of the sinuses.

In addition, injectable therapy is used to stimulate the head and neck and help drain infection. A lymphatic protocol using procaine and homeopathic injectables can reenergize your lymph nodes manually and energetically, creating profound effects more naturally and safely.

In cases where people have had chronic exposure to poisonous metals from dental work (like aluminum or mercury), injectable therapies help detox ganglia or collections of nervous tissues in the head and neck that have been polluted by metals.

When toxins like pesticides or metals first enter a nerve or ganglia, they may not immediately alter the function of the nerve or the muscle or tissue it innervates. However – over time, as the offending toxin or metal bio-accumulates in nervous tissue, it can begin to alter the function or competency of the nerve or the tissue it innervates. These are perceived as many unpleasant symptoms – hard to explain, but real. Ringing in the ears, burning of the tongue, dry mouth, painful face, autoimmune reactions in tissues – all are possible symptoms of nerves experiencing changes in function.

Many of these issues respond to natural injectable therapies that help reset the function of certain parts of the head and neck, like the sphenopalatine ganglia (a collection of nerves connected to the trigeminal nerve, associated with headaches and migraines), which also influences emotional health.

LOST IN THE BRAIN FOG

Rg3, Niagen, Hydroxycobalamin

by Dr. Matthew Carpenter

There are lots of causes of the condition referred to as brain fog, something really difficult to pin down – especially when you have it. Mady Hornig, MD, associate professor of epidemiology at New York’s Colombia University Medical Center, calls it “the inability to really punch through, a vague sense of what you’re trying to retrieve, but you can’t focus on it. The effort to harness the thought can be as draining as physical activity.”

Brain fog can be a symptom of many different mental and physical maladies, including fungal infections, metal toxicity, sleep denervation, hormone changes, high stress, side effects of prescription medications – the list goes on and on. Being a biological dentist working with mercury-toxic patients daily doesn’t mean I have the market cornered on brain fog, but I see a lot of it.

I ask all new patients to describe subjective complaints – how they don’t feel well – and we set goals for changes they want. One of the more frequent symptoms described is brain fog, an expected occurrence when you’ve been exposed to metals like mercury, which have been shown to harm brain neurons and cause neurodegeneration.

Retrograde axonal transport – and the supernatural.

The phenomenon of retrograde axonal transport is the science that demonstrates that mercury can move from your amalgam fillings through the nerves of your teeth, traveling back through nerves that control your nervous system to – your brain!

Being a biological dentist in the Austin and Round Rock area has its advantages, here one can find everything from alternative health practitioners to farmers markets to choices for grass-fed meat or local, organically grown vegetables in local restaurants. While I love duck eggs, Kimchi, and locally harvested honey, sometimes you come across natural things that have been turned into something, well – supernatural.

One of my favorite things is working with brilliant minds like Ray Solano, RPH, MBA, CCN, radio host, and head compounding pharmacist for Specialty Compounding. Ray and his lab have developed a new compounded solution with three synergistic ingredients – Rg3, Niagen, and Hydroxycobalamin – that shows promise with brain fog and neuro-degeneration. Users of the compound have reported instant improvements in memory, and the ability to articulate thoughts clearly and directly.

How it works:

  • What is Rg3? (Editor’s note: No, not the former Baylor quarterback, benched by the Redskins, which is what you find when you search it online.) Derived by steaming Panax ginseng root, Rg3 is used for neuroprotection, decreasing inflammation, antifatigue, vasorelaxation, brain trauma protection, immune enhancement, cancer therapy, and protection from conditions such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Ginseng root is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a general health tonic, and today is used mainly as an adaptogen, a substance that increases nonspecific resistance of the body to a wide range of chemical, physical, psychological and biological stressors. Purified individual ginsenosides – the pharmacologically active ingredients in ginseng – are becoming popular in integrative medicine to treat health conditions instead of whole ginseng root extract, since individual ginsenosides have different chemical structures and effects.
  • What is Niagen? Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is a more potent form of vitamin B3 – niacin, an important part of cellular metabolism that improves the way cells use energy. On a cellular level, NR is used to create the NAD+ coenzyme, which plays a key role in the function of mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of the cell. Research indicates that NR could be used as a nutritional supplement to improve metabolic and age-related disorders.
  • What is Hydroxycobalamin? It’s a natural, more readily absorbable and bioavailable form of vitamin B12, the form to which the body has to convert any B12 you ingest in food and supplements to convert it into a usable form. It bonds to free radicals in your system.
